KEEPING OUR FREEDOM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

notes to teaching by Terry Somerville

Most Christians have an initial experience of great peace and the presence of God. But sometimes it slips away and they enter into a terrible struggle. God wants us to be free and anointed. This study is to help us grow in faith and regain our confidence by understanding the grace that is ours.

LIVING IN THE FREEDOM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

When we flow in the anointing of the Holy Spirit we experience inward freedom and flow in the Spirit without difficulty.

Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but {righteousness}, and {peace}, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

All that we do is a ceasing from our own works and enjoying God's ability flowing in us.

Hebrews 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his.

We believe God and are counted righteous by trusting God , not the result of works. In the same way God causes us to walk in good works.

Eph.2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. {ordained: or, prepared}

When we trust God our conscience is clear and we have confidence before God. Then we ask and receive from Him.

1 John 3:21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN CHRISTIANS STRUGGLE

When the flow of the anointing lessens we often slip back into "the law " and performance. We try to imitate the life of the Spirit, but it is just empty works and we know it. Then we condemn judge ourselves under the law and feel condemned. Satan accuses us.

1. We lose the anointing for some reason. We need to keep on being filled with the Spirit and obeying Him. But if we don't we slip into step 2.

2. We strive to do as a law what we once did in the freedom of the Spirit.

Gal.3:3 Are you so foolish? Having begun with the Spirit, are you now ending with the flesh? (RSV) 4 Did you experience so many things in vain? --if it really is in vain.5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith? 6 Thus Abraham "believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness."

3. Our peace leaves and we enter into a slavery to sin trying to overcome it by works and get back the freedom we lost.

10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed be every one who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, and do them."

Rom.6:16 Do you not know that if you yield yourselves to any one as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?

4. This way of living kills us. We are dying inside as we are enslaved to the law.

2Co 3:6 ...for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. {giveth life: or, quickeneth}

5. We come under accusation from Satan and judge and condemn ourselves.

1Cor.4:3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man's judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self. {judgment: Gr. day}4 For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord. {know: or, I am not conscious of any fault}5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

6. The result is we speak curses over ourselves, declaring how awful we are etc. instead of God's goodness.

GOD'S REMEDY FOR THIS CAPTIVITY - GRACE

The Lord will certainly free us from such a situation. It is the same remedy as you received at salvation. You were vile and fallen, yet He saved you by believing in Him!

1. Discover what you have been serving under the law and get it under God's grace.

Usually some expectation of yourself or others, some pain you avoid or some fleshly pattern has risen up and you are serving it. God has let it be exposed by this difficult time.

2. Receive God's Grace. You are not under the law. Obtain total forgiveness and freedom.

Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

1 John 3:19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. {assure: Gr. persuade} 20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

3. Set your mind on the things above .

Rom. 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

6 To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things

4. Cease From Your Labor

Rom 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Heb.4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. {unbelief: or, disobedience}

5. Speak Blessing To Yourself in the Lord

Eph 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. {true...: or, holiness of truth} 25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.

6. Receive the Spirit and walk with Him again

4 in order that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.6 To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.indeed it cannot;8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.9 But you are not in the flesh, you are in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Any one who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.10 But if Christ is in you, although your bodies are dead because of sin, your spirits are alive because of righteousness.11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit which dwells in you.

Rom.8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, "Abba! Father!"16 it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God,17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
