THE WALKING IN THE SPIRIT SEMINAR

Thankyou for your interest in the Walking In The Spirit Seminar. Over many years I have endeavored to teach our own study groups about walking in the Spirit. I gradually developed and expanded notes to accompany the teaching until it reached this present form in 1989.

The tapes of the teaching were recorded at the Congregational Christian Church Pacific Regional Camp. Some teaching was omitted, which I added later on the tapes, and extra teaching was given in Seminar 6 which I've added to the notes.

I am indebted to Rev. Douglas Warren not only for his personal ministry to me as a young Christian, but for teaching me the differences between soul and spirit. The easy to understand diagrams of the triangle and river I learned from Doug's teaching many years ago.

Many authors have touched on these matters before and I would recommend two here. The most in-depth is The Spiritual Man a massive work by Watchman Nee. Also try the Total Man series by Lester Sumrall.

Both notes and tapes are Copyright. However, permission is given to reproduce them in whole (not part) for use in teaching you own studies. I pray this teaching will bless you as it has blessed those at our church.

Yours In Christ:

Rev. Terry Somerville

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT SEMINAR I - 1.

The Christian is meant by God to walk in the Spirit. Too often we spend years, or even decades living the fleshly life, producing little fruit for God.

" But I say, walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, and the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit" Gal 5:16,17 "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked, For he who sows to His own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life." Gal.6:8

THE KEY - GOD'S SPIRIT IN YOU

JOHN 3:16 - born again by God's Spirit

1 John 3:9 - New nature from God's Spirit

2 Cor. 3:6 - Ministry of power from God's Spirit.

It is of supreme importance for the Christian to know the difference between the soul and spirit. Only the spirit of a man can comprehend spiritual reality, but without proper knowledge how can we comprehend what is spiritual and what is carnal?

Until the Christian can comprehend the difference between soul and spirit he will probably live from the soul rather than the higher life of the Spirit.

I - 2

SPIRIT SOUL AND BODY OF MAN

Man is made in the image of God . We are Body, Soul and Spirit. Tripartite.( refer to triange diagram)

BODY - the physical part of us - like a ship. Has five distinct faculties: sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing. Our body makes us world conscious.

SOUL - Like the Captain of the ship, directing the operation of the vessle.

Has three distinct parts.

A. MIND - the part that thinks, intellectual.

B. WILL - the part that makes decisions, volition.

C. EMOTIONS - the part that feels, emotional.

It is impossible to find another part of the soul.

Our soul makes us conscious of ourself.

SPIRIT - our natural spirit - not the Holy Spirit

Like the owner of the ship, intended to be in charge of the whole person, the Captain acting in accordance with our spirit's wishes.

There are three faculties of our spirit:

A. CONSCIENCE - bears witness with the Spirit or is grieved

B. INTUITION - knowing something without reason

C. COMMUNION - fellowship with God.

Our spirit makes us God Conscious.

THE FALLEN CONDITION

Because of sin we are born in a fallen state.

-Our spirit is dead in trespasses and sin (Eph 2:1) not extinct. -Our mind is corrupted (2 Cor.3:14) we still think, feel; and decide but as corrupted by tree of knowledge. -Our bodies decay. we still live .

Like a ship (body) whose captain (soul) has taken total control because the owner (spirit) is dead , we live out of our body and soul and not our spirit. I - 3

THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

THE CHRISTIAN IS MEANT TO WALK IN THE SPIRIT AND NOT IN THE FLESH AS TAUGHT IN ROMANS 8

THE NEW LIFE OF A CHRISTIAN

2 COR. 1:22 "God has given us His Spirit"

Romans 8:14 "All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God"

Hebrews 10:15ff God writes his laws on your heart.

Gal.2:20 "It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives within me"

God intends for us to live under the divine leadership of the Holy Spirit. However, with our fallen nature we still are experience sin, corruption , decay and ultimately death. Romans 8:4ff shows how Jesus defeated the power of sin to rule us and the sting of death to keep us.

READ GAL.5:16-26 -note the works of the body , soul and spirit. -note the fruit of the Spirit in body, soul and spirit

THE RIVER OF LIFE (see corosponding diagram)

When we are saved and born again the HOLY SPIRIT comes and dwells within us. Then the words of Jesus come true:

JOHN 7:38,39 "He who believes in me , as the scripture has said, out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water." Now this He said about the Spirit, which those who believed in Him were to receive"

JOHN 4:14 "the water I shall give him will become in him a spring of living water welling up to eternal life"

By experience we have found that the flow of this river is often blocked to a certain extent. LIKE THE ISRAELITES ENTERING THE PROMISED LAND , we discover that some of our inner enemies have been removed and others remain for us to deal with in faith. God desires to teach , train and prove us in these areas. These are the boulders that block the stream. Primarily we encounter three things:

1. UNDEALTWITH SIN

Sin which has not been confessed and repented will block the flow of the Spirit. Often this is buried in incidents of hurt or betrayal in the past which result in resentment, unforgiveness , anger and bitterness towards those who hurt us.

2. UNCRUCIFIED FLESH

Areas of our life in which we follow the old human nature rather than putting it to death will block the flow of the Holy Spirit in us.

II-2 3. THE DEVIL

Because of our sin and flesh nature the devil often gains a foothold and his bondage can keep the Spirit from flowing in a certain area of our lives.

These blockages or 'boulders' are often interlinked and holding each other in place. For example the sin of unforgiveness may lock in the flesh of alcoholism and violence and be driven by a demon of revenge. Freedom in a particular part of ones life often means dealing with a cross section of sin ,the flesh and the devil.

FOUR STEPS OUGHT TO BE TAKEN IN PRAYER

- CONFESS SIN - CRUCIFY THE FLESH - rule your fallen nature - BIND AND DRIVE OUT ANY EVIL SPIRITS INVOLVED - SEEK THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THAT AREA OF LIFE

THESE FOUR THINGS WILL FREE UP THE RIVER BED SO THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN FLOW. IN THE SAME WAY THAT THE ISRAELITES HAD TO CONQUER EACH ENEMY BY FAITH AND KEEP THEMSELF PURE, SO WE MUST GAIN EACH AREA BY FAITH. WE CAN NO LONGER BE PASSIVE IN OUR MIND OR ACCEPT WHATEVER COMES TO US. WE MUST VIGILANT IN EMOTIONS AND WILL AND NOT ACT ON THE FEELING OF THE MOMENT.

WE EXCERCISE AUTHORITY OVER OUR FALLEN NATURE

Gal.5:16 " Walk by the Spirit and you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh"

Phil. 2:12 "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for God is at work in you both to WILL and to WORK for His good pleasure."

BODY- 2 Tim.2:22 "flee youthful lusts" - 1 Cor 6:18 "shun immorality.." - Romans 8:13 "put to death the misdeeds of the body"

SOUL -2 Tim.1:7 "God has given a Spirit of power, love and self control" -Col.3 "Set your minds on things above...." -Phil4:8 "Think on these things". -2 Cor.10:5 "take every thought captive to obey Christ"

SPIRIT - James 4:7 "flee idolatry" - 1 John 4:1 "do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God"

READ EPHESIANS 4:17ff ; Col.3:1-17; note all the things you can do in body, soul and spirit.

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT SEMINAR III

DEALING WITH THE DEVIL

The Christian not only has to deal with the fallen nature, as indicated in our previous study, but is agrivated by the work of the devil on the flesh. Though our spirit is joined to God's Spirit we find that our old nature can be attacked , tempted and tormented by demons.

EPHESIANS 6:12 "We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

HOW THE ENEMY WORKS

JOB 1:6,7 among the sons of God (us) "going to and fro on the earth and walking up and down upon it"

1 Peter 5:8 "prowls around like a roaring like seeking someone to devour"

Heb 2:14 He holds the power of death.

1 Tim.3:7; 2Tim 2:26 Lays snares

Zech 3:1; Daniel 10:13; Acts 16:16-18; Resists the servants of God.

ATTACKS BODY

Luke 9:39 siezures caused by demons.

Luke 13:16 Jesus heals woman bent by a spirit of infirmity.

ATTACKS MIND

Acts 5:3 "Ananias why has Satan filled your heart to lie.."

Matt.16:23 Jesus tells Peter "get behind me Satan" indicating Peter was repeating Satans lie.

2 Cor 10:5 our spiritual warfare destroys arguements.

ATTACKS WILL

John 13:2,27 The devil put it into the heart of Judas to betray Him.

Matt 4:1-9 BRINGS TEMPTATION (see also 1 Thess.3:5)

ATTACKS EMOTIONS

2 Thess.2:9-12 Satan is allowed to send strong deceptions on the perishing because they had pleasure in unrighteousness. Emotional attractions are involved here. "Itching ears" III-2

ATTACKS SPIRIT

2 Thess.2 SEVERAL WARNINGS here and other places about being deceived in spirit .

Basically, the devil can attack any area of the Christians life that is allowed him. But Christ has secured the victory over all the powers and prinicipalities. (read Ephesians)

THE CHRISTIAN'S AUTHORITY OVER SATAN

MATT 10:1 "He gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out"

EPH.2:6 we " sit with Christ in the heavenly places" EPH.1:21 "far above every every rule and authority..."

MATT. 16:19;18:18 Keys of the kingdom - power to BIND and LOOSE Power to BIND - take captive , to control (see Matt 12:29) - join two things to strengthen - for healing - as a bandage

Power to LOOSE - release - cancel power of

MARK 11:23 power to speak to the mountain to be removed

JAMES 4:7 "resist the devil and he will flee from you."

EPH. 4:27 " give no place to the devil"

DETECTING THE ENEMY

DISCERNMENT OF SPIRITS

1 COR. 12:10 - The Holy Spirit gives the supernatural ability to distinguish between spirits. It is a spiritual revelation and not a matter of natural insight or interpretation.

SCRIPTURAL TEST

The Holy Spirit ALWAYS agrees with the word of God. Any spiritual leading, teaching, thought , feeling or impression that contradicts the plain teaching of the bible is not from God. This may even be applied directly by questioning .

1 JOHN 4:1-3 "Test the spirits whether they are of God...any spirit which confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God. Every spirit which does not confess Jesus is not of God...."

1 JOHN 2:22 The spirit of anti-Christ denies Jesus is the Christ and denies the Father and the Son.

III-3 THE FRUIT TEST

The Holy Spirit always brings the fruit of the Spirit. The character of love, peacefulness, patience , self control must be evident. The Holy Spirit leads us to repentence, crucifying the flesh.

Evil spirits appeal to the carnal nature, tempt us to sin, exalt self above all. The works of the flesh show their character as forceful, pushy, imapatient, operating out of fear, self justification and pride.

PERFORM A FRUIT TEST

HOLY SPIRIT EVIL SPIRIT

Impressions are followed by peace and rest. Impressions are followed by confusion, perplexity feeling something is wrong.
Holy Spirit impressions grow stronger as you pray. Devils Impressions grow weaker as you pray.

CAUSES OF SPIRITUAL OPPRESSION

1. SIN AND LIVING IN THE FLESH

Continuing in sin gives a place to the devil. Because we remain under law in that area of our lives (see Romans 8) we are subject to judgement .

1 TIM.3:6 ..."puffed up with conceit, and fall into condemnation of the devil."

EPH 4:26,27 ..."be angry but do not sin....give no opportunity to the devil.

2 TIM 2:26 ..."repent...escape from the snare of the devil after being captured by him to do his will."

1 JOHN 3:8 "he who commits sin is of the devil"

III-4

2. SPIRITUAL INHERITANCE

Familiar spirits and the bondage of former generations can carry on to the children until deliberately repented of and broken.

EXODUS 34:7 "visiting the sins of the fathers ...to the third and fourth generation."

JOHN 9:2 " who sinned, this man or his parents , that he should be born blind " (answer was neither, but obviously they believed it was possible.)

3. SATAN'S BRUISES

The devil attacks each one of us and through lifes hurts takes opportunity to bruise us. It may even be allowed by God to cause us to seek Him.

GENESIS 3:15 (to serpent) "he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."

ISAIAH 53 "He was bruised for our iniquities.."

LUKE 9:39 ..."to set at liberty them that are bruised"

4. LIES AND SPIRITUAL DECEPTION

The lies of Satan can bring us into or keep us in captivity. Unless we stand firm in the truth about our place in Christ we can be in bondage. (see scripture sheets).

1 TIM. 4:1 "Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons...."

EPH 5:6 "Let no man deceive you with empty words.."

2 THESS. 2:1-3 to watch out for deception by word, letter, by spirit, saying the day of the Lord had come.

JOHN 8:32 "ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free"

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT IV-1

THREE WORKS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1.THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS OF SIN. JOHN 16:8-11

-We must repent and forsake our sin in response

-This is typified by John's baptism.

2.THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES US TO CHRIST JOHN 14:15-17

-The Holy Spirit gives us saving faith

-The Holy Spirit is "counsellor" to lead us in new life.

-We must walk in the spirit and crucify the flesh.

-This is typified by baptism in the name of Jesus.

3.THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES THE THINGS OF CHRIST TO US

-Bears witness to God John 15:26

-Tells us what God says - Glorifies Jesus John 16:12-15

-Gives us supernatural gifts to carry out the ministry of God.

-BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT Acts 1:4-8

UNDERSTANDING THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Christians are somewhat confused on the question of baptism. The key is to understand that , spiritually speaking, three kinds of baptism occur in the new testament. These occurred in various combinations .

1. JOHN'S BAPTISM LUKE 3:3,4

-CONDITIONS -Repentance in preparation for Jesus to come

-SIGNIFIED by water baptism

-In the name of the Father

* SPIRITUALLY - required a change of heart - repentance for cleansing of the flesh.

IV - 2

2. BELIEVER'S BAPTISM

-CONDITIONS -Upon belief in the saving work of Christ, repentance and conversion.

-SIGNIFIED by water baptism

-Symbolized Death of the old man, life of the new. Romans 6:3,4

* SPIRITUALLY the Holy Spirit baptizes you into Jesus Body. Your spirit is joined to His Spirit making you His child. 1 Cor. 12:13

3.BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT Matt. 3:11

-CONDITIONS -Upon request in prayer, and leaving off of all sin.

-People were said to "receive the Holy Spirit" or that the "Holy Spirit fell on them"

-Is baptism in name of Holy Spirit

-OUTWARDLY SIGNIFIED by water baptism

-Symbolizes a total immersion into the Holy Spirit

* SPIRITUALLY Jesus baptises you with the Holy Spirit.

INCIDENTS OF BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

ACTS 19:2-7 - believed and saved - baptised in John's baptism - never heard of the Holy Spirit - rebaptized and received the Holy Spirit.

ACTS 8:12-17 - believed in Jesus and baptised with water. - baptised ONLY IN THE NAME OF JESUS - Peter and John pray - Holy Spirit falls on them.

ACTS 10:44-47 - Baptised with Holy Spirit while still hearing gospel ! - Baptised with water afterwards in the name of Jesus.

It is clear that the disciples looked for repentance, faith in the saving work of Christ, water baptism in the name of Jesus and the baptism of the Holy Spirit before their job was done. So should we.

IV - 3

ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS

1. Isn't a person baptised with the Holy Spirit when they are born again ?

NO .The stories from acts make it clear that they are separate events though they might happen simultaneously. When we are born again the Holy Spirit baptizes us into Jesus body. but it is Jesus who baptizes us with the Holy Spirit.

2. Must everyone speak in tongues to be baptized in the spirit ?

NO, tongues speaking is not referred to as a necessary evidence of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit, though it is regarded as a clear evidence in Acts. Paul does say that he wishes we "all would speak in tongues", but says all do not. (1 Cor.12) Paul makes clear that we ought to desire it.

CLINIC - RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. Have you repented of your sin, accepted Christ as savior, and been baptized in water?

2.Do you desire the baptism with the Holy Spirit ?

3.Have you ANY unconfessed sin, especially occult involvement ? Any unbelief against the baptism with the Holy Spirit? Any current situation in life you know is wrong? IS YOUR HEART RIGHT TOWARDS GOD AND YOUR NEIGHBOR IN ALL THINGS?

4. Have you asked Jesus to baptize you with the Holy Spirit ?

5. WHEN YOU FULFILL THE ABOVE CONDITIONS YOU SHALL BE BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT SEMINAR V

THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

"..he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me, for John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit." Acts 1:4

-The Holy Spirit Himself is God's gift to us. Acts 2:38

-We are to wait for this baptism before going out.

" But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you shall be my witnesses...." Acts 1:8

-The purpose of the baptism with the Holy Spirit is "power" to be "witnesses" .

-This power comes in many ways. One way is that the Holy Spirit gives supernatural spiritual gifts for ministry. 1 Cor.12:4

-We do not possess these gifts in the "ownership" sense. Rather, they are given as God wills and moves for the common good. 1 Cor.12:4-7

1 CORINTHIANS 12 OUTLINE

-vs 1 Paul does not want us to be ignorant.

-vs 2-3 Paul wants us to know that both the Holy Spirit and demons can inspire utterance. To curse Jesus is never from the Holy Spirit. To say "Jesus is LORD" is always from the Holy Spirit. This does not refer to the believers confession but to "speaking by the Spirit."

-vs 4 GIFTS -(grace) -undeserved extraordinary grace from God. Strictly supernatural from the "same Spirit."

-vs 5 SERVICE (ministrations) - ministering as executing the commands of God. The calling and ministry of an official character. Ex: apostles, prophets, pastor, teacher, evangelist. All have the "same Lord."

-vs 6 WORKING (operations) The effect of putting forth of power. The outward manifestation of gifts and service. Ex: healings, conviction of sin and conversion, inspired speaking etc.

-vs 7, 11-26 Gifts are distributed throughout the body "to each one" for the common good as God wills.

vs 8-10 Outline of supernatural gifts. V - 2

GIFTS DELINEATED

THE WORD OF WISDOM

A thought, impression, voice or vision giving direction or insight. This is not a word spoken with wisdom, but rather with wisdom as it's content. We can put it in words or leave it unspoken.

THE WORD OF KNOWLEDGE

A thought, impression, voice or vision giving facts not naturally known. Again this knowledge may be expressed in our words, or not at all. The "word" refers to how it would be manifest in the body. It would be spoken out.

FAITH

Not saving faith in general which is the common endowment of all Christians, but wonder working faith. Ex: for miracles, martyrdom, special provision.

GIFTS OF HEALING

The supernatural restoration of health. It may be as simple as the gradual reversal of illness or as incredible as a creative miracle. The plural "gifts' indicates there are differing gifts for different healings. This is confirmed in ministry where one person may be effective ministering to backs but not to other kinds of illness.

THE WORKING OF MIRACLES (power)

This is commonly thought of as the overriding of natural law producing astounding signs and wonders. The words literally mean the outward manifestation (working as in vs 6) of the power of God. (as in Acts 1:8).

PROPHECY

Declaring the heart of God for His people. Speaking under divine inspiration. The purpose is to edify the church.1 Cor.14:4 This may be given as direct inspiration of words, or of concepts put in our own words. This gift is to be tested when it is used in a meeting. (1 Cor.14:29) This is not the same as being a prophet which is a person called to warn, direct, prepare the church.

V - 3

THE DISCERNMENT OF SPIRITS

Literally, "the ability to distinguish between spirits", by thought, impression, voice or vision from the Holy Spirit. Since evil spirits attempt to manifest in the workings of the church and try to counterfeit the gifts of the spirit this gift shows if something is divine, human or demonic. (see 1 John 4:1 on counterfeit prophecy)

NOTE: IT IS NOT CRITICISM AND MUST ITSELF BE TESTED.

VARIOUS KINDS OF TONGUES

Speaking spiritual words from our own spirit in which our mind has no part. "My spirit prays" (1 Cor 14:14) The speaking is entirely under our control, only the language comes from our spirit. The purpose is to edify ourself and not the church. It is a sign for unbelievers when it is a known language (1 Cor.14:21,22) but must be accompanied by the gift of interpretation of tongues. Note:tongues need not be a language known in the earth. (1 Cor 13:1)

INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES

The ability to interpret what was said in a tongue. This is not translation, and may come to us as the sense of the message or word for word. Paul says this gift must be present with any public manifestation of tongues.

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

You can all prophecy one by one so that all may learn and be encouraged." 1 Cor.14:31

When you have gathered with other Christians in an attitude of worship and praise we are bound to believe that the above scripture is true and God will gentle speak to us.

Quietly wait on the Lord. If you feel a gentle prompting, share with the group the leadings of the Spirit and let the others weigh what is said.(1 Cor.14:29)

V - 4

(supplement)

""What no eye has seen or ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love Him ", God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For what person knows a man's thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom, but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit. The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God because they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ." 1 Cor.2:9-16

IMPORTANT DISTINCTIONS ABOUT THE SPIRIT'S GIFTS

THEY ARE NOT FROM HUMAN NATURE

Spiritual gifts are received not created within our nature. Consequently they are folly to human wisdom. It is by the Holy Spirit in us that we are able to understand them at all. We must carefully distinguish the gifts from human nature.

VISION IS NOT VISUALIZATION

Visualization is a deliberate action of the human mind to create a mental picture. Some have taught that visualizing Christ at work is a gift of the Spirit. In fact this is an occult idea. When the Holy Spirit brings a vision as part of a gift (perhaps a word of knowledge etc.) it is a divine imparting which we do not seek. We are to seek God alone and be prepared to receive the gifts as He wills to giver them.

"Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophecy to you...they speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord." Jeremiah 23:16

IMAGINATION IS NOT REVELATION

Again, some teach that we use a "sanctified imagination" to release gifts of the Spirit. The heart of man has not conceived of what God has for us, but it is revealed by the Spirit.(1 Cor.2:9) We are to "set our minds on things above" ,not imagine what God is doing on earth. He will divinely reveal what He is doing, and it actually will oppose the fleshly mind.

"Woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing! ...set your face against the daughters of your people , who prophecy out of their own minds." Ezekiel 13:3,17 V - 5 NOTE ALSO

-The Holy Spirit is not a "force", He is GOD!

-Miracles are not the "focusing of energy", they are divine intervention through us.

-Prayer is not self emptying meditation. It is fellowship with God and living in that relationship.

-Powerful Christian living is not a matter of techniques, confessions, knowledge, or any ability we have. It is that "we know Him". It is totally and entirely our relationship to the living God!

WORKSHOP ON THE HOLY SPIRIT - VI

THE CHURCHES PLACE IN THE HEAVELY PLAN

READ EPHESIANS CHAPTER 1

vs 3- we have every spiritual blessing - we have spiritual blessing - our blessing are in the heavenly places.

WHAT WE ARE "IN HIM"

-vs 4 - We are holy and blameless "In Him" -vs 5 - He "destined us in love to be His sons through Jesus Christ" -vs 7 - We have redemption "in Him" -vs 10 -His plan is to "unite all things in Him, things in heaven and things on earth." -vs 11 - We are "destined and appointed to live for the praise of His glory."

WHAT HE HAS PLACED IN US

-vs 13,14 - We are sealed with the Holy Spirit as the "guarantee of our inheritance." -VS 17 - The "spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him." -vs 18 - Hope and "glorious inheritance" -vs 19 - "the immeasurable greatness of His power in us who believe."

THE POWER IN US

-It is the same power that raised Christ from the dead. -Made Christ sit at the Fathers right hand in the heavenly places. -Sits above every authority - in heaven, on earth, in hell. -He "has made Him head over all things for the church" vs 22

Because we are joined to Christ we are joined to His great victory.

EPHESIAN 2:2-6 says we once followed the prince of the power of the air (Satan) when we lived in the passion of our flesh. But God saved us, joined to Christ and raised us up and we are seated with Christ in the heavenly places. The plan and purpose is found as follows:

-vs 7 - that He might show His kindness in the coming ages -vs 10 - that we would be His workmanship, created for good works. -vs 22 - that we may be built into the Holy temple in the Lord " a dwelling place of God in the Spirit." -3:10 - That " that through the church the manifold wisdom of God would be made known to the powers and principalities in the heavenly places"

VI - 2

GODS PURPOSE IS TO DEMONSTRATE HIS GRACE IN SAVING US, CREATE HIS WORKMANSHIP IN US FOR GOOD WORKS, CREATE IN US A DWELLING PLACE FOR HIMSELF, AND USE US TO SHOW HIS WISDOM TO POWERS OF DARKNESS!

THE ARMOUR OF GOD

EPH 6:10-18 Outlines the armour used in demonstration of the wisdom of God to the powers and principalities. It is a battle which we must take up. Each piece of armour is provided in Christ, but must be "put on".

For example putting on the belt of truth would mean actually living in and applying the truth of Christ to our life. When a lie comes to you finds no place in you since you are GROUNDED in the truth.

It is not within the scope of this study to detail the armour here.

THE MINISTRY GIFTS FROM CHRIST TO THE CHURCH

As we have seen God wants to build us into a Holy Temple ,a dwelling place for the Lord in the Spirit. In order for this to happen ministries of the Lord must function properly. Like the passage on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, Eph 4:1-16 outlines the fact that we are one body in Christ. In this instance the equipping of the saints is provided for by gifts of ministry. People called to certain tasks.

MINISTRY GIFTS ARE NOT GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

It is necessary to clear up some misconceptions about ministry gifts and distinguish them from gifts of the Holy Spirit.

1. Ministry gifts are gifts from Jesus, not the Holy Spirit.

2. These gifts are people themselves, not supernatural powers.

3. These ministering people "equip the saints for the work of ministry." Gifts of the Holy Spirit are given "to each one for the common good" which means all kinds of ministry.

4. Only "some" people are given equip the saints of God.

5. When every part is working properly the body will be built up.

VI - 3 MINISTRY GIFTS

APOSTLE - sent to begin a new flock of God.

PROPHET - guards and warns the flock.Points the way.

EVANGELIST - births new sheep

PASTOR - cares for, grooms, cleans, heals the sheep.

TEACHER - feeds the sheep

When a person is given to the church by Christ to minister the whole person is given. This is a combination of their talents, education, gifts of the Spirit etc.

Obviously certain abilities and gifts will be prominent enabling them to do such ministry. For example Paul, an Apostle:

called - in a mighty way . By Christ Himself. Talent - able to converse with learned men. Gifts of H.S. - did the 'Signs of an Apostle" In his heart - considered all the human advantages as "refuse" for the sake of Christ.

PROBLEMS WITH MINISTRIES IN THE BODY TODAY

The building of the body of Christ depends on " each part working properly".(Eph 4:16) Various difficulties accompany ministry today.

RESTRICTED MINISTRY

In our experience ministry has been limited to pastor and sometimes evangelist. This forces those called into other ministries to compromise. For example: - An evangelist forced to pastor produces some new born Christians who never get off milk. He is always frustrated and feels unable to cope with pastoral matters. - A teacher feeds the sheep but new ones are never born. Etc.

PRESUMPTUOUS MINISTRY

Another pitfall of not recognizing all the ministries of God is presumption. Being called to one ministry but presuming it is another. For example a pastor who presumes to be a teacher will often stray into heresy, softening doctrine to sooth the sheep. Furthermore, moving into ministry in presumption blocks the true minister from coming forth.

THE MINISTRIES COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER

"When each part is working properly , makes bodily growth and upbuilds itself in love." Eph 4:16

The various ministry gifts are meant by God to compliment each other. In fact, one cannot work properly without the other. We are to "submit one to another."

Philip (evangelist) won souls, but apostles had to come and pray for the Holy Spirit to fall.

Peter (apostle) began to favor circumcision of the gentiles, Paul (as teacher) corrected him.

The whole body is meant to work together without the artificial distinction of only one ministry gift to a group. There ought to be several ministries happening in any body gathering together.

AUTHORITY AND LEADERSHIP

A word about leadership is necessary here. Sometimes those called to ministry were leaders, sometimes not.

In scripture the "elders" led the people. The elders were "older", or sometimes specially called out.

Apostles in every instance were "fellow elders".

Some like Barnabus, Paul, and Timothy were called prophetically to ministry. Thus they became elders.

Others were recognized as true ministers but were not called prophetically called. For example Phillip was seen to be an evangelist, but not prophesied over.

WE HAVE A COMMISSION

MATT.28:18-20 MARK 16:15-20

1. To preach the gospel to the whole creation.

2. To make disciples (learners) of all nations.

3. To baptize and teach.

4. To drive out demons.

5. To heal the sick.

6. To speak in new tongues.

7. To be divinely protected.

WE HAVE AUTHORITY (EXOUSIA) IN CHRIST

-the right to act

"Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Never the less, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." Luke 10:19,20

We are "seated with Christ in heavenly places" Eph 2:6

WE HAVE POWER (DUNAMIS) IN CHRIST

" But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you..." Acts 1:8

"and there are varieties of workings (of power) but the same God inspires them all in every one." 1 Cor.12:6

REASONS WE FAIL TO FULFILL OUR COMMISSION

1. Sin blocks the authority and our relationship to God.

2. We are acting outside of the great commission and so have no authority.

3. We are not carrying out our commission because of unbelief and lack of closeness to God.

4. We have not prevailed in prayer and so have no power. We are relying on our own ability and really do not know God or how He sees us.
